Hippotherapy is a physiotherapy treatment tool delivered by trained physiotherapists, using the movement of a horse to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input. As the client sits on the horse, its motion closely mimics the movement of the human pelvis during walking, requiring the rider to actively engage their muscles to maintain balance. This strengthens neural pathways to enhance postural control, balance, strength, muscle tone, and sensory processing, supporting overall balance and body awareness. The horse's gait provides 95 to 110 repetitive movements per minute, offering high-repetition, rhythmic input that can be varied in speed, direction, and intensity.
Hippotherapy can benefit both children and adults working toward goals such as improving ambulation, postural control, balance, righting reactions, strength, upper limb function, and gross motor skills. It also supports functional outcomes related to daily activities and falls prevention.

Please note, hippotherapy is a treatment tool used by physiotherapists, it is a form of physiotherapy intervention. Hippotherapy is not therapeutic riding or horse riding.
Our hippotherapy sessions are done with the support of the incredible RDA Oakford team. Each session requires an RDA coach, horse handler, and two side walkers. These members of our team volunteer their time to support our clients to achieve their goals.
Our most important team member is the horse! Each horse has a unique movement pattern that we match up with our client to support their individual mobility goals.
Please contact RDA Oakford if you are interested in joining their general riding program or signing up to volunteer.
